Osteoarthritis of the Foot and Ankle

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that affects joints in any part of the body, including the ankle and foot. Commonly affected joints of the foot are the ankle, the three joints of the hindfoot, the midfoot, and the big toe. Symptoms of osteoarthritis include stiffness and pain. There may also be swelling, a limited range of motion, bone spur development, and difficulty in walking. When one has osteoarthritis, cartilage, serving as a protective layer for the ends of bones that form joints, gradually wears down. Injury (such as severe sprains and fractures) and abnormal foot structure or mechanics (like flat feet) can lead to osteoarthritis. Other types of arthritis may mimic osteoarthritis, which is why it is important to consult with a podiatrist. Such a professional will provide a proper diagnosis and treatment options for you.

Arthritis can be a difficult condition to live with. If you are seeking treatment, contact Edward Fryman, DPM, FACFAOM from Seaford Foot Care Center. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Arthritic Foot Care

Arthritis is a joint disorder that involves the inflammation of different joints in your body, such as those in your feet. Arthritis is often caused by a degenerative joint disease and causes mild to severe pain in all affected areas. In addition to this, swelling and stiffness in the affected joints can also be a common symptom of arthritis.

In many cases, wearing ill-fitting shoes can worsen the effects and pain of arthritis. Wearing shoes that have a lower heel and extra room can help your feet feel more comfortable. In cases of rheumatoid arthritis, the arch in your foot may become problematic. Buying shoes with proper arch support that contour to your feet can help immensely.

Alleviating Arthritic Pain

  • Exercises that stretch the foot can prevent further pain and injury and increase mobility
  • Most of the pain can be alleviated with anti-inflammatory drugs, heat, and topical medications
  • Massages can help temporarily alleviate pain.

It is best to see your doctor for the treatment that is right for your needs and symptoms. Conditions vary, and a podiatrist can help you determine the right method of care for your feet.

The number of young athletes is increasing steadily, and many are developing a foot condition that is known as Sever’s disease. It can be common among children and young teenagers, and it affects the growth plate in the heel. The majority of people are unaware that this particular foot ailment is not a disease, as the name implies, but is named for the individual who identified it. Most children will outgrow it, and will not have lingering effects from it as they get older. The main symptom with Sever’s disease is heel pain, and it can cause the inability to participate in chosen sports. This happens as a result of rapid bone growth, which can occur more quickly than growth of the tendons and muscles. This can cause the Achilles tendon—which connects the heel to the calf muscles—to tighten, resulting in swelling and tenderness. The pain and discomfort from Sever’s disease may be managed by wearing custom-made orthotics, and it is beneficial to stop the activity that caused the condition. If your child is active, and is limping from heel pain, it is advised that a podiatrist be consulted who can determine what the best treatment is.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see Edward Fryman, DPM, FACFAOM from Seaford Foot Care Center. Our doctor can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Handling Itchy Feet During Pregnancy

When a woman carries a baby to term during a pregnancy, she undergoes a litany of different bodily changes. Many of these changes can impact the feet. For example, during a pregnancy, a woman can experience sensations of itchiness on her feet. This itchiness can prove to be quite an annoyance for a pregnant woman, particularly during the nighttime when the sensations may interrupt sleep. Itchy feelings are primarily caused by hormonal skin changes. There are a number of steps that a pregnant woman can take to mitigate the itchiness. For instance, a woman can wear socks that have a loose fit and are made of breathable materials. In particular, socks that are made of cotton or even wool can fit this description. To soothe itchy feet, a pregnant woman can apply a good moisturizer on the feet. Additionally, giving the feet an oatmeal bath could help soothe itchiness. Lastly, massaging the feet could minimize itching sensations. Be sure to contact your podiatrist about these techniques and others to ensure that you are doing what is best for your own feet. If you are pregnant, contact a podiatrist today who can help you to maintain proper foot care.

Pregnant women with swollen feet can be treated with a variety of different methods that are readily available. For more information about other cures for swollen feet during pregnancy, consult with Edward Fryman, DPM, FACFAOM from Seaford Foot Care Center. Our doctor will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

What Foot Problems Can Arise During Pregnancy?

One problem that can occur is overpronation, which occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and tends to roll inward.  This can cause pain and discomfort in your heels while you’re walking or even just standing up, trying to support your baby.

Another problem is edema, or swelling in the extremities. This often affects the feet during pregnancy but tends to occur in the later stages.

How Can I Keep My Feet Healthy During Pregnancy?

  • Wearing orthotics can provide extra support for the feet and help distribute weight evenly
  • Minimize the amount of time spent walking barefoot
  • Wear shoes with good arch support
  • Wear shoes that allow for good circulation to the feet
  • Elevate feet if you experience swelling
  • Massage your feet
  • Get regular, light exercise, such as walking, to promote blood circulation to the feet

Dangerous Sports for Feet and Ankles

Participating in sports is not only fun, but it also supports physical fitness and teaches teamwork. However, sports can also be dangerous. Some sports like football, basketball, soccer, tennis, and running have more potential to lead to foot and ankle injuries than others. These sports have a high risk of causing Achilles tendonitis and ankle sprains, in addition to blisters, turf toe, stress fractures, metatarsal fractures, ankle impingement, and plantar fasciitis. Athletes can help prevent injuries by warming up, gradually increasing movement, wearing well-fitting footwear for their sport, and using other protective gear. If you suffer from a foot or ankle injury while playing sports, see a podiatrist for an informed diagnosis and treatment.

Ankle and foot injuries are common among athletes and in many sports. They can be caused by several problems and may be potentially serious. If you are feeling pain or think you were injured in a sporting event or when exercising, consult with Edward Fryman, DPM, FACFAOM from Seaford Foot Care Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Common Injuries

The most common injuries that occur in sporting activities include:

  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle Sprains
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fractures
  • Turf Toe

Symptoms

Symptoms vary depending upon the injury and in some cases, there may be no symptoms at all. However, in most cases, some form of symptom is experienced. Pain, aching, burning, bruising, tenderness, tightness or stiffness, sensation loss, difficulty moving, and swelling are the most common symptoms.

Treatment

Just as symptoms vary depending upon the injury, so do treatment options. A common treatment method is known as the RICE method. This method involves rest, applying ice, compression and elevating the afflicted foot or ankle. If the injury appears to be more serious, surgery might be required, such as arthroscopic or reconstructive surgery. Lastly, rehabilitation or therapy might be needed to gain full functionality in the afflicted area. Any discomfort experienced by an athlete must be evaluated by a licensed, reputable medical professional.
