The Toe Stretch

There are many reasons why an individual may want to stretch their feet. For example, flexibility, mobility, and foot strength may be improved, which can make it easier to complete daily activities. There are also many different ways to stretch the feet. For example, the feet can be stretched before and after a workout. Alternatively, the feet are often stretched during yoga practice. An effective yoga stretch is known as the toe stretch. This stretch can be performed by sitting on the back of the heels with the toes stretched out horizontally on the yoga mat. If you are someone that enjoys practicing yoga, performing a toe stretch may be an easy way to incorporate foot stretches into your daily routine. If you want to learn more about toe stretching, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist today, who can provide you with helpful knowledge.

Stretching the feet is a great way to prevent injuries. If you have any concerns with your feet consult with Edward Fryman, DPM, FACFAOM from Seaford Foot Care Center. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Stretching the Feet

Being the backbone of the body, the feet carry your entire weight and can easily become overexerted, causing cramps and pain. As with any body part, stretching your feet can serve many benefits. From increasing flexibility to even providing some pain relief, be sure to give your feet a stretch from time to time. This is especially important for athletes or anyone performing aerobic exercises, but anyone experiencing foot pain or is on their feet constantly should also engage in this practice.

Great ways to stretch your feet:

  • Crossing one leg over the others and carefully pull your toes back. Do 10-20 repetitions and repeat the process for each foot
  • Face a wall with your arms out and hands flat against the wall. Step back with one foot and keep it flat on the floor while moving the other leg forward. Lean towards the wall until you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds and perform 10 repetitions for each foot
  • Be sure not to overextend or push your limbs too hard or you could risk pulling or straining your muscle

Individuals who tend to their feet by regular stretching every day should be able to minimize foot pain and prevent new problems from arising.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

Improper shoe sizing can cause a myriad of problems for your feet. Shoes that don’t fit you properly can lead to muscular imbalances in your body, which can result in foot, knee, and hip injuries.

Tips for Finding the Right Running Shoe

  • Make sure you have a thumb’s width of wiggle room between the end of your longest toe and the front of the shoe.
  • There should be little to no slipping at the heel
  • Don’t assume your size in one shoe brand will be your size in another
  • Do not lace up your shoes too tightly
  • Walk around in the store with your new shoes before you buy them

Who Is Prone to Getting Sesamoiditis?

The sesamoid bones are connected to other bones by tendons, and they are the only ones that are not connected to other bones by joints. They may also be found embedded in the muscles throughout the body, and two of them are located in the foot. They are found underneath the foot, and they help to move the big toe. Additionally, they support the weight of the body, and sesamoiditis may occur when the surrounding tendons become inflamed or irritated. Ballet dancers, runners, and baseball catchers may be prone to developing this condition, which can be a result of excess force that is placed on the feet while participating in these activities. People who have high arches or who have medical conditions, such as osteoarthritis, may get sesamoiditis, and the bones may become weakened. Common symptoms that can accompany this condition include bruising, swelling, and it may be difficult to straighten or bend the big toe. Treatment generally begins when the activity is stopped that caused this condition, and elevating the foot may reduce the swelling. If you have foot pain, it is suggested that you confer with a podiatrist who can effectively diagnose sesamoiditis, and guide you toward the right treatment solutions.

Sesamoiditis is an unpleasant foot condition characterized by pain in the balls of the feet. If you think you’re struggling with sesamoiditis, contact Edward Fryman, DPM, FACFAOM of Seaford Foot Care Center. Our doctor will treat your condition thoroughly and effectively.

Sesamoiditis

Sesamoiditis is a condition of the foot that affects the ball of the foot. It is more common in younger people than it is in older people. It can also occur with people who have begun a new exercise program, since their bodies are adjusting to the new physical regimen. Pain may also be caused by the inflammation of tendons surrounding the bones. It is important to seek treatment in its early stages because if you ignore the pain, this condition can lead to more serious problems such as severe irritation and bone fractures.

Causes of Sesamoiditis

  • Sudden increase in activity
  • Increase in physically strenuous movement without a proper warm up or build up
  • Foot structure: those who have smaller, bonier feet or those with a high arch may be more susceptible

Treatment for sesamoiditis is non-invasive and simple. Doctors may recommend a strict rest period where the patient forgoes most physical activity. This will help give the patient time to heal their feet through limited activity. For serious cases, it is best to speak with your doctor to determine a treatment option that will help your specific needs.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Seaford, NY . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
